Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of using Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) with multimedia to enhance students' speaking fluency at SMK Teuku Umar Semarang, a vocational high school on Jl. Karangrejo Tengah IX No.99A, Karangrejo, Kec. Gajahmungkur, Semarang City, Central Java. Using a one-group pretest-posttest methodology, this study investigated the effect of CLT with multimedia on students' speaking abilities. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students' speaking fluency, as evidenced by an increase in mean score from 8.52 to 8.85 and a p value of 0.006. Furthermore, the study investigated students' perspectives of using CLT with multimedia, revealing their favorable sentiments about the technique. Qualitative data from interviews and classroom observations revealed that multimedia-based assignments and activities boosted students' confidence, involvement, and passion. This study's findings imply that CLT plus multimedia is an effective teaching technique for improving speaking fluency, learner autonomy, and creating a supportive learning environment. Furthermore, the findings suggest that the inclusion of multimedia in CLT reduces learner fear, improves contextual comprehension, and allows for meaningful communication. The study's consequences for language teaching and learning at SMK Teuku Umar Semarang are examined, along with recommendations for further research and practice.
