Abstract

This paper focuses on the meaning of love in the novel The Bridge of San Luis Rey by Thornton Wilder. The meaning of love is portrayed through the lives of some of the main characters in this novel who expect the love from the closer people. When they‘ve got the love that they expect and try to start a new life, they become the victims of the collapse of the bridge of San Luis Rey along with the people who love them sincerely. By using the intrinsic literary research method combined with theory about love, the writer tries to reveal how much the meaning of love that exists in the novel. The result showed that the presence of the main characters is very meaningful to the people around them. Their death as the result of the collapse of the bridge of San Luis Ray makes the people around them are aware that they are meant for those who are still alive.
