Abstract
The problems formulated in this study are: 1. What are the names of animals in Japanese mythology?. 2. How are the visualizations and forms of animals in Japanese mythology?. 3. What is the meaning of animals in Japanese mythology?. This study has three objectives, namely: to find out the names of mythological animals in Japan, to find out the visualization and shape of mythological animals in Japan and to find out the meaning of mythological animals in Japan. This research uses descriptive qualitative research method. The research focused on analyzing names, visualizations and shapes, as well as meanings focused on 20 names of Japanese mythological animal species. Sources of data obtained from books, previous studies, journals, articles and the internet. Data collection methods used are library methods and note-taking techniques. The data that has been obtained are analyzed using morphological analysis which examines linguistically the process of forming names. Description of the visualization and form of mythological animals based on an anthropolinguistic perspective. Furthermore, the data is analyzed based on semantic studies to analyze the meaning of the mythological animal. The results of this study consist of three sub-chapters. First, the naming of the 20 animal names in Japanese mythology comes from figurative meanings, living environment, visualization/form/shape, onomatopoeia of animal sounds,characters, a combination of the two sexes, records in history books, body size, country of origin and duties, Japanese view, and doesn’t contain any particular meaning. Second, the visualization and form of animals in Japanese mythology depicted in unique and colorful visuals. Third, every mythological creature in Japan has a different meaning.
