Abstract

Slang is important in making film dialogues natural and relatable, but translating it into Indonesian poses challenges. This study compared how professional translators and fansubbers translated 31 slang words in Legally Blonde, analyzing their accuracy, cultural equivalence, and readability. The translation strategies examined were generalization, neutralization, cultural substitution, paraphrase, literal translation, and omission. Both groups showed high accuracy, with professionals scoring an average of 1.84 and fansubbers 1.87 out of 2, indicating effective preservation of original meanings. Professionals mostly used neutralization in 36% of cases to soften slang for broad audiences, while fansubbers combined neutralization with cultural substitution and paraphrasing to preserve emotional impact, scoring higher (1.90) than professionals (1.68) in cultural equivalence. Both groups achieved strong readability scores (professionals 1.97, fansubbers 1.94), though professionals favored more formal language while fansubs used informal styles with occasional minor typos. It is suggested that professionals incorporate more culturally adapted slang to boost authenticity, while fansubbers improve proofreading. Future research could examine audience responses and develop better guidelines for translating slang in Indonesian subtitles.
