Abstract

The primary concern that underpins this study is the high prevalence of depression among college students, a condition that frequently remains undetected until it reaches a more advanced stage. Academic pressure, inadequate emotional support, and life transitions can compound the condition. Early diagnosis is imperative to avert long-term detrimental consequences on students' mental, academic, and social well-being. However, conventional manual diagnostic methods are often laborious, dependent on expertise, and challenging to scale widely. An expert system was developed using a quantitative research method with a user acceptance test. The UAT metrics include: Ease of Use, System Effectiveness, and Overall Satisfaction. The highest Certainty Factor was found for moderate depression at 79%. The research involved quantitative methods with a User Acceptance Test (UAT) with 32 student respondents, resulting in a satisfaction level of 71.7%. The expert system successfully diagnoses the type of depression based on the symptoms experienced by the patient, thus helping students make an initial diagnosis before consulting a specialist. The practical impact of the system is threefold. The facilitates rapid early diagnosis, fosters increased mental health awareness, and the efficiency of the diagnostic process Finally, the system ensures better accessibility, contributing to the overall well-being of the student population. Technology-based systems can be accessed anytime and from any location, providing opportunities for students reluctant to see a psychologist in person.
