Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a major public health problem globally. According to Top Ten Countries or Teritories for Number of Adult (20-79 years) with Diabetes, Indonesia is on ranks seventh in the world with 10.7 million sufferers. Lifestyle modifications have proved successful at reducing the incidence of diabetes mellitus. Unhealthy lifestyle such as lack of physical activity and smoking is one of the ten primary causes of death and disability. Objectives: To examine the effect of lifestyle modifications (physical activity and smoking habits) on incidence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia. Methods: The data was collected by reviewing published articles from google scholar and PubMed for open access publications. All articles reviewed are articles from research conducted in Indonesia. Lifestyle modification analyzed for their effect on the incidence of diabetes mellitus are physical activity and smoking habits. Results: Physical activity and smoking habits affected the incidence of diabetes mellitus. Regular physical activity was able to prevent the incidence of diabetes mellitus. Physical activity in the form of exercise can reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus. Smoking habits was increasing the risk of diabetes mellitus while stop smoking was decreasing the risk of diabetes mellitus. Other factors that affect the incidence of diabetes mellitus were age, genetics, obesity, and food pattern. Lifestyle modification other than physical activity and smoking that can be done to reduce the risk of diabetes mellitus were body weight control and maintaining a healthy diet. Conclusion: Lifestyle modification is a key to decrease the incidence of diabetes mellitus. Regular physical activity and stopping smoking are essential to decrease the risk of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia in addition to controlling body weight and maintaining a healthy diet.
